I'm Engaged!

I'm engaged!

Needless to say, I was completely shocked and taken by surprise. Michael had gone to work early and taken a half day yesterday and came home around noon. We went on a bike ride through Newport Coast and were supposed to go pick up lunch after, but he had other plans...

After climbing up the coast and aiding a fellow cyclist with a flat tire, we started the ascent to the top of Ridgecrest. I was really grumpy throughout the end of the ride because I had blown all my energy already and Michael was suggesting I swerve through both lanes of traffic to lessen grade of the climb. I was pretty agitated and nervous that he suggested I ride with traffic driving into my face (Gee, I wonder why...) Though he was doing it himself, because to be honest- there really weren't any cars on the road.

But he continued to motivate me and tell me to "keep it up." He nonchalantly mentioned that 3 years ago on that day we were lost in the woods together, and today we were riding up a hill together. "How things (our hobbies and interests) have changed," I thought.

At the end of the hill I saw a familiar white car but dismissed it as something that shouldn't have been there. When I came to a stop to take in the view of Orange County Michael asked, "Did you see the car? I brought us lunch!"

I replied, "What?"

"Well, I brought us lunch. Happy anniversary, sort of... anniversary of our first date, the hike. We don't ever celebrate, so, I thought this would be nice."

Then he busted out this HUGE picnic basket/cooler!

"I brought Darya's," he said.

"That's so sweet!" I replied, with tears in my eyes...

So he began setting up a blanket and some food, and I throughout the meal I thought the ordeal was a little extravagant and orchestrated. "Could it be?" I thought, "No, it's not the right time, I need to push that thought out of my mind before I get ahead of myself."

"This is sweet," I said, "I was ready to ride back and grab some Subway or something..."

"Make sure you save room for dessert," he said, and shortly after he went to the car to grab a white gift take out box.

He handed me the box and said, "It's tiramisu, from my favorite place," and went back to the car again!

I thought, "We're on a diet and you bought TWO cakes?!"

And then I saw a blue box, and I thought, "Okay, something's definitely up. That's Erin's trademark, for sure."

Then he opened the box, and got on one knee and said, "Teresa, we've been together for 3 years now, and I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and grow old together."

And I cried so hard I didn't hear anything he said.

"Will you marry me?" he asked with a shaky voice.

I couldn't reply as he cleaned the frosting off and put the ring on my finger.

"It's too big," I said as it was sliding off my finger. Candidly I asked, "Is it real?"

"Of course it's real!" he said and laughed. We continued to exchange hugs and kisses, and I had him repeat the proposal as I had already forgotten what he said. We drove home as he recounted the entire tale from the day he started saving the ring, to asking my parents for my hand, and finally through the events that lead him to the big day. We then went to size the ring at the jeweler, and already I missed the weight of the band on my finger as it was being altered at the store.

I can't stop looking at the ring, and despite it being much more than I expected, I love it to death, and am so proud and happy to wear it on my finger and call myself his for the rest of my life.

Michael, I love you with all my heart, and I will cherish this day forever. Thank you for everything. You mean the world to me.

Erin, the camera in the cooler was funny. Jimmy & Kristy, I would have laughed to death if you guys had jumped out of the bushes!

Thanks everyone for the congratulations, and I hope you enjoyed the story. Sorry we didn't take any pictures, however, Erin snapped a couple of the ring and the cake:

Thank you everyone!

Newport Coast

Quick ride down PCH to Newport Coast and back home through Back Bay. A pretty strong ride that we cut short due to the painful dry air. That kind of air is really hard to breathe and makes your lungs and chest feel all raw. Michael snapped a picture of me on my bike. I'm in my drops like I'm racing all fast, but I'm only going 2 mph.

Getting Back on the Bike

It's been a while since Michael and I have really had a serious ride. Last night we rode to watch the OC Crit and Tuesday we went around Back Bay and Irvine until one of Michael's spokes flew out and we rolled home easy. Two weeks ago, August 7th, was the last big ride we did- 4 hours, 60 miles, 2600ft of climbing. I remember we were sleep deprived that day and rode like @!#$, and I'm still feeling tired today. Losing a little sleep each night makes the deficit hard to get out of. We are definitely looking forward to our next vacation.

I picked up the old steel bike I've had since I was 10 from my parent's garage and turned it into my commuter. It took an entire day to clean 10 years of grit and dust of it and to take off the dork disks and excess reflectors. I finally have a bike that I can ride around without worrying about it getting stolen. I took it to my dentist appointment the other day and he had a good laugh about how I couldn't decide on where to park and lock it up.

The weather has been great. Summer came and the days are fiercely hot. I can't wait for the long Sunday ride with some good friends.

Pearl Izumi Barrier Convertible Jacket

Just got my new Windbreaker + Vest! Woohoo! After shopping around for weeks I found out about Convertible Jackets! Now I've got two garments in one to accommodate for the crazy weather changes we are having in Southern California and the never-dissipating marine weather. Yes! It's a vest with sleeves (more like a shrug/bolero) attachable by zippers and a Velcro piece on the back of the neck. (You can see the velcro tab in the 3rd pic.) Pretty smart IMO. It's a bit baggy around the torso for a S(33-35" chest), but fits well enough to negate an exchange through the Postal System.

Ironically I've mostly been riding indoors since Michael's wheel exploded (well, it's just out of true, hahaha) and for various reasons revolving around life's mishaps...

Anyway here it is!

Affliction

Some girls like Louis V and Jimmy Choo, I have a hardcore incurable affliction to Assos of Switzerland. My friends call me the Bike Swag Queen for all the the custom pieces added to my bike, but no one knows the extent of my swag-grab-a-holism. It's an addiction that I think stems from the satisfaction of that "I just HAVE to HAVE that now" feeling (for less than what it's supposed to cost, if that's any justification at all); the satisfaction of the consumer's thrill. Jerseys, bibs, jackets, accessories, and even water bottles round out my current collection, and currently I'm on a hunt for a wind shell.

In other news, my camera flew out of my jersey pocket on PCH around Corona Del Mar and a car smashed it to pieces. I was able to recover the memory card, but I certainly won't be uploading pictures for a while. I've also been doing the good ol shop ride, watching the Great Park Crit, and some long weekend rides.

Things have really slowed down since the Earth decided Summer days needed to behave like Winter and since the Tour ended. I guess it's just a sign of the encroaching end of the sport's season. Fortunately I was able to get my hands on some sassy Assos winter gear. Go go empty bank account!

Saturday Climbs and Monday Recovery

Saturday full of climbing and a recovery ride on Monday.

Saturday we went through Cowan Heights again. Watching the tour at the moment and am always amazed at the steady rhythm of the riders through the Pyrenees. My pace through the tiny hills in Tustin pale in comparison. Serrano was less steep and I was able to try some sprints. Very thankful to have such supportive friends to ride with. very thankful to have such strong riders to pull me through the windy SART.

8am start from A Road Bike 4 U to beat the heat.

Hungry Hungry Hippo

I'm almost always hungry. Since I started my diet back in April on this day I've managed to lose 20 pounds. (Thanks Livestrong.com!) A lot of people ask me what I eat... well... Usually for lunch it's a cup of brown rice and a cup of vegetables. I know, exciting right??? But today I made myself a special treat!

Soba with a side of Miso Salmon

Nutritional Information

That's 2oz of broiled salmon brushed with miso, mirin, and soy, 2oz of soba, and 1/8 cup dipping sauce for a grand total of 288 calories. Not bad eh? It really isn't a lot of food, but with only 885 calories in a day there isn't really much I can eat. Of course on days that I ride I eat a pre-ride snack and take Vitargo with me so I'm not lying on the side of the road trashed dry out of nutrients. Anyway... On with the ride report!

Today's Ride: Newport Coast x2 Again

So slow! I was too tired to ride like usual. I couldn't even hit max HR going up the hill... all I was able to do was survive. It's not a feeling I like when I'm on my bike, I'd much rather be pumped up, but I suppose everyone has their bad days. Michael and I had a picnic after the ride overlooking the Marina- I wish I had brought my camera. Lots of people were having picnics as well, the weather is just perfect for it.

Wednesday Group Ride

Man it was hot last night!!! What a horrible ride! One guy had 3 flats and there was a crash. We rolled home safe and slow after that... Such a wierd day...

The Cervelo is now a Time Machine!

New Toy!!! Time iclic carboflex pedals!!! They really are very very easy to clip into. Totally brainless. They also don't weight anything. 225g I think it was? I picked em up yesterday from Laguna Cyclery and the idiot that sold them to me gave me 2 left pedals. Well, honest mistake, it just SUCKS having to drive through all that traffic to get to Laguna.

Happy Independence Day btw!

Had a great ride this morning down the Santa Ana River Trail. I forgot how nice it was North of Anaheim. Was trying to motor-pace some boys from VeloViet down the trail but needed a little more speed. Oh well! The headwind was atrocious on the way back but we made it through and helped pull another rider through.

Anyway here are some pics!

Back Bay to Irvine and Back

Went to pick up the better half from work so we could ride home together on our bikes. 1.5 hours, 30 miles. It was a hammerfest there with lots of tailwind- easy to maintain an 18 avg. I sat behind Michael's wheel the entire time on the ride back to Newport... so strong, even through the wind.

Ride Data

I hate how accurate the new calorie counter on the Garmin 500 is. Michael's old 700 over calculates by sometimes double the amount of calories. Dieting... it's not easy.

Chasing Legends

Saw Chasing Legends last night at the Regency in South Coast, a documentary/behind the scenes look at team Columbia HTC at last year's Tour de France. It was really inspiring! The movie is playing 2 more times I believe in Orange County. Seven door prizes were raffled off as well. I didn't win anything.

Can't wait for the Tour de France to start this Sunday!!!

Wednesday Group Ride

Wednesday Group Ride with A Road Bike 4 U. Starts out from the shop in Irvine on Red Hill/Main, then goes through Portola and Sand Canyon. Michael and I were late- no way to make it out to the shop, so we did a hammer-fest from home and caught the group on Alton. I got up to 33 on the sprint, but still couldn't hang on to the boys' wheels. Next time!

Check out the route!

New Toy: Idio Carbon Bottle Cages

Picked up a set of carbon bottle cages off ebay. I rode the bike down to the Post Office to pick up my package with an allen wrench in my pocket and installed them as soon as the post office lady gave me my package.

Check it out!!!

I also went on a slow ride today just to spin out they legs. They're pretty stiff after yesterday's 70 mile ride. The weather is pretty awful in Newport- it's been overcast all day and it sprinkled quite often. The wind makes riding pretty harsh too. Still I wish I had brought my camera. The views at Back Bay are remarkable despite the weather. The marsh is looking healthier and greener every year, and I'm certain the rain is to thank for all the new growth this year.

*&$^ Cervelo

So the bike shop and or Cervelo failed to deliver my frame on time again. I'm so angry I can't even write about the details, though I will say that the worst part of it is that the manager raised his voice and got angry with me after making several false promises on delivery... So I got my refund... They lost my business for good...

At least now I can wait and see the 2011 Contessa. =)

**Update**

The manager apologized and my frame is coming in tomorrow. FINALLY!!!

Crash Scare and Updates

Recently I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about cyclists around me crashing their face. At first it was just the pros but now I'm seeing dentures and stitches on people from my shop rides, and I'm starting to get really scared about racing... The race reports from Domingues Hills don't help either. Additionally my new S2 is coming in either today or tomorrow, and I'm certain that after building it up I'm going to be way too scared to crash it. I'm still debating whether or not to keep my Tarmac... Initially I thought I would be less attached to it, hence would take it to races... I know, extremely counterintuitive as it defeats the purpose of purchasing a more aero race bike...

I got started racing so late this season that I'm feeling less motivated to do more races this year. I did my longest ride of the season last Sunday (I think it was the 6th), 60 miles from A Road Bike 4 U through Irvine to Santiago, then through the SART and back to the shop. I replaced the cogs on my rear wheel and since then I've been climbing like a champ. It's awesome!

I got new tires (Michelin Pro Race 3) after getting a flat on last week's Wed night ride. The green and pink combo looks awesome imo! My S.O. ordered pink and green bartape as well... aaaah I can't wait for my Cervelo to come in! Then I gotta equip it with the new white ltd ed 3T handlebar and stem... OOO and rumors of white Sram stuff coming out in 2011... Goodbye savings account!

Will definitely upload pics of my new bike when it's in. =D

Old Town Brea Criterium

Sunday May 23, 2010

Nooo!!!! There were only 9 women there and I came in 9th place! Top 6 got cash prizes! That means there was a 66% chance to win money!!! Well not really considering it was a Women's Cat 3/4 and I was one of 2 cat 4s.... the probability of winning money was more like.... 10 percent, HAHA.

So that was an interesting race! There was a freakin hill that kicked my ass the first couple of laps- I wasted a lot of energy being nervous, cold, and hating that hill. I got popped off the back about lap 4 on the climb, and after that I finally sat up and caught my breath and cleared my head.

I vowed to not get lapped, so I held on for the next 30 minutes, time trialing it and trying to improve my lap speed on each successive lap. There was a lot of headwind so not much was to be gained on the tiny descent after the climb, but the final turn into the finish line was where I was able to just punch down in the drops and blast all the way through the first turn. I got caught after turn 3 on the final lap. There were several laps when it looked like I was in first place rather than last- I thought that was funny. But initially... after getting dropped, I did wonder why I was still racing and what the point of it all was, but I'm glad I finished the race. A solid 9th place, haha. If I had just hung with the pack I would have had a good chance at placing- but it takes me a while to get into the rhythm.

I'm sad that I'm going on vacation this week- I won't be able to do the Weds night shop ride, the Thursday night Crit, or the weekend races. To top it off I've been working a lot of freelance, so I didn't ride yesterday, but there's always tonight and tomorrow morning.

See the image? Totally looks like I'm in first place, right? hahhaha.

OC Great Park Crit- May 20th

I raced with the Men's Cat 4/5 this time around. Four of my friends from the shop ride were there with me, and of course Michael was rooting for me on the side.

My second time at the Great Park- I was able to maneuver the course more confidently- the turns didn't get me this time around. I got popped off the back on the first lap- and hopped on and popped off about 2 more times before I pulled off to the side for some advice from the coach/significant other- Apparently I was still wasting energy pedaling inefficiently in the wrong gear. So I waited for the pack to come around again and hopped on and got into the tiny ring in the back and lo-and-behold I was able to hold on to the pack. I ended up coming in dead last but man did it feel good. It was my first time actually finishing a race (the first week was pretty lame since I didn't come in with the pack) so it really felt like a worthy accomplishment.

The weather was great that day too- really hot- just the way I like it when I ride. Otherwise I need warmers for anything under 66. I'm such a Californian pansy.

Wednesdays: Shop Ride Day

Every Wednesday I ride with the ladies from Surf City Cyclery in the morning and the guys n gals from A Road Bike 4 U in the evening. The Road Bike 4 U ride used to be Sunday, but they moved it to Wednesday when summer came around and the sun stayed up later.

It's a fun ride, if I had a large readership I would help promote but at the moment this blog is more or less just a journal of progress. I'm happy today because I'm down 7 pounds since the beginning of seasons (one of my favorite movies in fact.) So, off I go!

Redlands Women's Cycling Clinic + Ontario Criterium

Ah Monday, back to work. I'm sad because all I can think about is cycling right now. I even rewatched Cavendish take the opening stage of the Tour of California during breakfast this morning. I'm also in the process of building up a new bike. I have a couple Sram Red components coming in the mail and my Cervelo S2 is being delivered to my LBS and will be arriving at the end of this month. Oh, and I got my US Cycling license so I can officially call myself a racer now! Woo hoo. I'm definitely looking forward to future races, especially with the confidence and skills I gained at the Redlands Clinic and Ontario Criterium over the weekend.

A picture I stole from someone off Facebook. I forgot my camera! Doh!

Overall the clinic was a good experience. You don't need to arrive as early as they suggest- I got there around 6:15. We got on our bikes around 9am and there wasn't really any important information dished out til just a couple minutes before. I had breakfast on the way since my body needs a really long time to digest before rides, but they served a typical cycling breakfast buffet (bagels, bananas, yogurt.)

I was part of the C (racers and wannabe racers) group. The first couple of exercises of the day focused on cornering. We started off with the basics and practiced weight shifting on different obstacles around the church parking lot. We then rode a short distance to do a couple of hill repeats.

The best part of the clinic for me was the Mock Crit. I really wish we could have spent more time on this portion of the clinic, and I wish we could have ramped up the difficulty level. We rode in a very small group so there wasn't the crazy feeling of being in a tight pack like in a real crit, but at least we got to practice attacking and counterattacking, and I managed to stay in the breakaway for a lap and come in 3rd (out of a dozen people, but I'm still proud, hahaha.) Anyway it's probably difficult to cater a clinic to everyone's skill levels but well, it was kind of expensive! In the end though, it's worth it, especially for the sake of support women's cycling. I mean, there were 100 women out there! The event was a success. Oh also they fed us Chipotle for lunch. (I think that was the second best part of the clinic.)

The Ontario Criterium on Sunday... Oh I made a HUGE mistake. I was doing great and felt so confident during the race- I had a good start and I managed to stay in the top 1/3 of the pack the whole time, but I was so focused on the people around me that I didn't pay attention to the announcer. It felt like the race was nearing the end and I heard the bell and sprinted as hard as I could towards the finish line! I started to slow down and realized the entire field was still moving... and I realized that it was only the sprint lap!!! No!!! I felt so embarassed and dejected I pulled out of the race and found a corner to sulk in.

I'm still embarassed but I really regret not finishing the race. I could have sprinted back in or at least tried to- even knowing that I tried would somewhat erase this small black mark in my memory... Even worse I left the race without notifying my significant other, so he assumed I had crashed...

Needless to say we left Ontario in a pretty foul mood, but after talking it over and getting attitude adjustment towards racing I'm ready to go out there again and start learning. I'll be at the OC Crit this Thursday seeing how well I can hang with the 4/5 guys. Hopefully their reputation doesn't precede them.

GP2 Logo Design

The Thurs night crit series I raced in last week is having a logo design "competition." The winning logo will be used on the winner's jersey. I wanted to put my skills to some good use so I sent these in. They liked the work and may give me some free races for my effort. Woohoo!

Thursday, May 6, 2010- The OC Great Park Crit Series

I thought I was going to be late and completely miss the ride, but I managed to arrive early enough to register and do a practice lap. I was way too nervous, looking back I didn't even get to absorb the course at all during that lap. I got in line with the Masters. Thankfully one of my shop ride buddies was there, and I vowed to hold on to his wheel.

I was mentally overwhelmed. I was surprised and confused when we started off and quickly forgot everything I had ever learned about crit racing. I approached the first corner and got boxed in on an acute turn, felt my wheel slip on some sand, and thought that it was the end of me. The pack attacked immediately and I had not recovered fully from my freak-out and completely got dropped- we were only several yards into the race. Feeling slightly dejected I struggled to catch up but I coudn't match the momentum of the pack and only saw the gap widen.

I continued to soft pedal, waiting to hop on to the next group coming up from behind. I was timid- afraid I would cut off people in the pack if I tried to move in. I wasted a massive amount of energy trying this over and over again, but with little success. Eventually I got the timing down and managed to hop back on with the 4/5s once, but did not have the strength to hold on to the pack. Apparently I was on the windy side, but the wind was the least of my worries at that point. I also managed to hop on to the Pro 1/2/3's once, but they were just blasting down the tarmac at an incredible speed.

I felt like I still had a legs at the end of the race. Where was that every time I got dropped after catching the end of the pack? Tsk tsk.

It was certainly an interesting and positive experience. I've always had severe anxiety attacks before competition, so today was really not bad for me at all. I definitely want to go out there again next week, and am goign to begin interval training and build up some sprinting legs. Wish me luck!

Counting Down...

I'm restless.

Five hours to the start of the race and my nerves start to hit. I managed to stay calm through training this whole week, riding my best, hoping that the sound of the whistle blow will bring me back into that rhythm. Hopping on the trainer takes my heart rate back to resting pace, but leaves me worried that my legs won't be able to sustain the effort needed even to hang on with the pack.

It's going to be my first criterium, and first ever bike race, so I'm understandably nervous. But I want this to be a good experience. I want to do my best- I don't want to go in expecting to get left behind because it is my first time... In fact, I daydream I'll shine out there and waste everyone on the field- that somehow racing will unleash a pedaling monster I didn't even know existed within- but reality is not so kind.

Writing it down helps. I watch a few of Sprinter della Casa's youtube videos and get pumped up. I watch MCSpandex's Performance again for a laugh. I read tips on bike forums yet again, and I start to get tired. I feel tired from the anticipation and really start to calm down. Hopefully I can retain this calm up til the race.

Thankfully the criterium is low key, and I'll have a few shop-ride-buddies pulling me through the 35+ category. Or at least I hope. I'm wishing myself luck, and telling myself to ride hard, play my usual game, and to stop counting down to what is likely the beginning of a new racing affliction.
